🌙 WHAT IS PANCHANG?
The science of choosing the right time.
Panchang is the Vedic time–energy system that tells us how a day will behave, not just what the date is. Panchang does not use one factor to judge time.
It combines five astronomical parameters to describe how an action will behave from start to finish.
Each element controls a different layer of time.
It is made of 5 cosmic factors:
🔹 Tithi
A Tithi is formed when the angular distance between the Sun and Moon increases by 12°.
360° ÷ 12° = 30 Tithis in one lunar month.
🔹 Vaar
A Vaar is determined by the weekday system, based on Earth’s rotation and the planetary hour sequence.
Each day is ruled by a planet according to the Chaldean order.
🔹 Nakshatra
The zodiac (360°) is divided into 27 equal parts of 13°20′ each.
The Nakshatra in which the Moon is placed at any moment becomes active.
🔹 Yoga
Yoga is calculated by adding the longitudes of the Sun and Moon.
The sum is divided by 13°20′, resulting in 27 Yogas.
🔹 Karana
A Karana is half of a Tithi, i.e., 6° of Sun–Moon angular separation.
There are 11 Karanas, repeated in a fixed sequence.
📖 Why Panchang matters:
Because success is not just what you do —
it’s when you do it.
📌 Scientific Insight:
Every element of Panchang is based on degree movement, not belief.
It measures time through planetary geometry.
1. Tithi — Lunar Phase
A tithi is the lunar day — the time it takes for the Moon to gain 12° separation from the Sun. There are 30 tithis in a lunar month.
Energetic role:
Tithis reflect the emotional and internal energy prevailing that day.
- Shukla Paksha (waxing moon) = growth, clarity, initiative
- Krishna Paksha (waning moon) = release, reflection, endings
Examples of general qualities:
- Pratipada–Chaturthi: beginning energy
- Panchami–Navami: steady action
- Dashami–Chaturthi: stable but sometimes challenging energy
- Chaturdashi–Amavasya/Poornima: culmination, transformation
2. Vāra — Day of the Week
Each weekday is associated with a planet and its subtle influence:
| Day | Planet | Key Energies |
|---|---|---|
| Sunday (रविवार) | Sun | Willpower, leadership, self-expression |
| Monday (सोमवार ) | Moon | Emotions, receptivity, nurturing |
| Tuesday (मंगलवार) | Mars | Courage, effort, discipline |
| Wednesday (बुधवार) | Mercury | Communication, learning, flexibility |
| Thursday (गुरुवार) | Jupiter | Growth, wisdom, optimism |
| Friday (शुक्रवार ) | Venus | Harmony, beauty, relationships |
| Saturday (शनिवार) | Saturn | Patience, responsibility, structure |
Energetic role:
Vāra gives the quality of outer action and rhythm — how you express and apply your energy.
3. Nakṣatra — Lunar Constellation
Nakṣatras are 27 sectors of the ecliptic (13°20′ each), tied to deep mythic archetypes.
Energetic role:
Since the Moon moves ~13° per day, it usually changes one nakṣatra per day — showing the emotionally dominant instinctive energy.
Examples:
- Ashwini: quick, healing, pioneering
- Rohini: growth, stability, beauty
- Mrigashīrsha: searching, curious
- Śravaṇa: listening, absorption and so on
Nakṣatra gives a subtle mood and motive to the day’s experience.
4. Yoga — Combined Sun–Moon Energy
Yoga is calculated from the sum of the Sun’s and Moon’s longitudes, creating 27 yogas.
Energetic role:
Yoga reflects the combined dynamic between consciousness (Sun) and mind/emotions (Moon). It shows how the inner and outer life are aligned or discordant.
Examples of broad qualities:
- Vishkambha/Yoga with expansion quality — supportive for growth
- Dhruva/Yoga with stable energy — grounding and focus
- Parigha/Yoga with challenging energy — pressure that leads to change
Yoga nuances the day’s functional impact — whether things will flow smoothly, require effort, or push transformation.
🔷 5 Karana?
- Karana = half of a Tithi
- There are 60 Karanas in a lunar month
- Each Karana shows how actions actually materialize
If Tithi is intention and Vara is effort,
Karana is the ability to finish, sustain, or stabilize work
🔷 Types of Karanas
Chara (Movable) Karanas – repeat every month
Good for routine actions.
| Karana | Energy |
|---|---|
| Bava | Steady, balanced work |
| Balava | Strength, support |
| Kaulava | Social, agreements |
| Taitila | Skill, craftsmanship |
| Garaja | Effort, discipline |
| Vanija | Trade, transactions |
Vishti (Bhadra) ![]() | Obstruction, caution |
Vishti/Bhadra is traditionally avoided for new beginnings.
Sthira (Fixed) Karanas – occur once per month
Strong karmic tone.
Karana Energy Shakuni Strategy, planning Chatushpada Stability, land, foundations Naga Depth, secrecy, transformation Kimstughna Release, closure
How They Work Together
Think of them like layers:
- Tithi — emotional cycle & intensity
- Vāra — outer planetary quality & expression
- Nakṣatra — instinctive mood & long-term influence
- Yoga — inner–outer coordination and direction
- KARANA– ✂️ Half of a Tithi (6°)
So the subtle energy of a day comes from the interaction of these four:
Tithi = internal mood
Vāra = external action quality
Nakṣatra = instinctive theme
Yoga = integration between internal and external
Karna=👉 Will the work finish smoothly?
Panchang works like a multi-layer system.
One factor is never enough —
Time responds only when all 5 are understood together.

🧠 Why This Matters
In traditional Indian astrology/panchāṅga:
- These elements help plan auspicious timings,
- Understand emotional flow,
- Align activities with natural rhythms,
- Cultivate awareness of subtle influences.
